'Dart's Red' Spiraea
Spiraea x bumalda 'Dart's Red'
Flower Color: Dark pink almost red clusters of
flowers in late spring and early summer. Some residual flowers in late
summer and fall. Very bright flowers set against reddish-green
foliage.
Size: 3' in height and 3-5' in width. Rapid growth rate on 'Dart's Red'. Some early spring pruning before foliage emerges makes a fuller plant.
Fall Color: Purplish-red fall foliage. New foliage is red that fades to green. Noted for bright new spring growth.
Hardiness Zones: 4-8. Hardy in most areas of the US.
Light Requirement: Full sun to part-shade. Better flowers and foliage in full sun.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate to High. Rarely would additional water be required after rooting in.
Notes: Very low maintenance shrub with a dome shape. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types. Looks great in mass plantings. Spring growth has a reddish tinge. One of the better flowering varieties. Flowers can last well into summer. Deer resistant.
