'Harbor Dwarf' Nandina
Nandina domestica 'Harbor Dwarf'
Size: 2-3 feet in height and width. Many
publications say only 1-2 feet and it is easy to keep this variety
short, but it will reach 3 feet if left alone. Perfect size for
smaller yards. Can be pruned by simply breaking out the tops. Will
sucker some, but not as much as Nandina domestica.
Foliage Color and Flowers: Evergreen foliage with very tight compact growth habit. Foliage is a dark-green color that becomes tinged with red in late fall and winter. Off white flowers become green and sometimes red berries in the fall.
Hardiness Zones: 6-9. Could be harmed in north wind in zone 6.
Light Requirement: Part-shade is best for 'Harbor Dwarf'. It will tolerate full sun, but it seems less vigorous.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate to High
Notes: Nandina 'Harbor Dwarf' is great along sidewalks and other narrow spaces. Very widely available. Takes several years to flower and fruit regularly. This dwarf suckers less than other Nandina domestica, which makes it a better low maintenance ornamental plant. Fertilize in the spring to produce vigorous growth.
