Loropetalum chinense var rubrum 'Ruby'
'Ruby' Fringe-flower
Size:
4-5' in height and 5-6' in width. Can get larger if
unpruned. This variety is slightly larger than the newer dwarfs,
but much smaller than other Loropetalum.
Foliage Color and Flowers: Ruby red new foliage and pink fringe like flowers multiple times a year. The flowers are similar to Witch-hazel.
Hardiness Zones: 7-9. Probably could be adapted to zone 6b, if kept out of the north wind.
Light Requirement: Full-Sun to Part-Shade. Even grows well in the shade, but has less color.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate to High. Not a plant that requires additional water unless severe drought conditions persist.
Notes: 'Ruby' is more compact than many of the other Loropetalum varieties. This evergreen shrub works great as a compact hedge. It can be used as a foundation plant, but will require some pruning. Very widely available. Still very popular although newer smaller growing varieties have been introduced.
