'Burgundy' Loropetalum (Fringe-flower)
Loropetalum chinense var rubrum 'Burgundy'
Size: 8-12 feet in height and 6-8 feet in width.
Can be kept smaller, but smaller growing cultivars should be used in
tighter spaces. Pruning takes away from the weeping open look that
this variety naturally has. Very fast growing.
Foliage Color and Flowers: Reddish-purple new foliage and pink fringe like flowers multiple times a year. Some winter flowering during warm spells. Very striking flower and foliage contrast.
Hardiness Zones: 7-9. Probably adaptable in zone 6b, if positioned carefully.
Light Requirement: Full-Sun to Part-Shade. The more sun the more flowers and tighter growth habit.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate to High. Almost never requires additional water.
Notes: This evergreen shrub works great as a large hedge. This variety reverts to white with age. The more it is pruned the faster it happens. Mine is half white and half purple and is quit nice. Very widely available. 'Burgundy' Loropetalum has fallen out of favor, because of newer dwarf cultivars. Rarely seen in the trade now.
