'Nikko Blue' Hydrangea
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nikko Blue'
Flower Color: Large round clusters of blue or pink
flowers. Flower color is dependent on soil Ph and aluminum in the
soil. To increase blue color of 'Nikko Blue' aluminum sulfate can
be added.
Size: 4-6' in height and 4-6' in width. Timing of pruning is very important. If pruned late in the season, flowers will be lost for the following year. It is best to place in an area were frequent pruning would not be required.
Foliage: Large serrated leaves that are very attractive in spring. Deciduous. The lack of leaves in the winter invites pruning which takes next years flowers off.
Hardiness Zones: 5-9
Light Requirement: Part-shade. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best for all Hydrangea macrophylla.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate. Wilt frequently in the afternoon during the hottest part of the summer. Wait until later in the evening to water, because they often recover from afternoon wilt and do not need additional water. Plants are frequently drowned trying to combat the wilting.
Notes: Very impressive flowers in late spring and summer. Not as popular with repeat flowering varieties now available. Well-drained moist soil is best for most Hydrangea varieties. Still very widely available. When people ask why they don't bloom, the answer is always, leave them alone.
