'Variegated Radicans' Gardenia
Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans Variegata'
Flower: Small white double
fragrant flowers that are similar to 'Radicans'. This plant is not
an impressive flowering variety compared to other larger growing
Gardenias.
Size: 12-18 inches in height and 3-4 feet in width. Low growing groundcover. Much slower growing than 'Radicans'. This variety needs to dry out between waterings or it is susceptible to root rot.
Foliage: This evergreen flowering shrub has amazing shiny variegated foliage. Will typically lose some foliage before flowering. Very showy.
Hardiness Zones: 7-10. Plant out of the winter wind in zone 7.
Light Requirement: Full Sun to Part-Shade. A little shade seems to keep this variety looking fresher.
Drought Tolerance: Moderate. Moist well-drained soil is best for all Gardenias. Raise this plant above the grade to prevent root rot.
Notes: Foliage is smaller on this low growing spreading variety. 'Variegated Radicans' is mostly used as a groundcover or a container plant. Make sure container have well-draining soil mix. Whiteflies can be a problem, but are easily controlled. Very widely available.
