'Dynamite' Crapemyrtle
Lagerstroemia indica 'Whit II'
Flower Color: Deep Red
clusters of flowers from mid-summer until frost. 'Dynamite' is one
of the best red cultivars.
Size: 15-20' in height and 12-15' in width. Very nice vase shape with little pruning. Rapid growth can be expected.
Fall Color: Orange and Red
Hardiness Zones: 7-9
Light Requirement: Full Sun to Part-Shade. Tighter fuller shape in full sun.
Drought Tolerance: High, but additional watering in late summer will increase flowering.
Notes: Introduced by Dr. Carl Whitcomb. New spring foliage is crimson and fades to green. Flower buds are also red. Very resistant to powdery mildew. Typically grown as a multi-trunked specimen. Near perfect foliage on 'Dynamite' and many of the other Whitcomb introductions. Very widely available. Spring pruning is typically done to produce compact growth habit. Spring slow-release fertilizer will increase growth and flower production.
