'Black Knight' Butterfly Bush

Black Knight Butterfly Bush

Flower:  Long spikes of dark purple flowers from early summer until fall.  'Black Knight' is great for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.  The darker color Butterfly Bushes seem to attract more wildlife than the lighter colors.

Size:  8' in height and width.  Some mid-summer pruning will create a more dense growth habit.  Plants should be cut down in early spring, because flowers occur on new growth.

Foliage:  Green foliage with silver backs.  The foliage is smaller on 'Black Knight' which makes the flowers stand out more.

Hardiness Zones:  5-9

Light Requirement:  Full sun to part-shade.  Much tighter growth habit in full sun.

Drought Tolerance:  Moderate.  Some additional water in the summer will help increase flowering.

Notes:  'Black Knight' is a vigorous grower every season.  Very nice foliage and tight growth habit.  Very low maintenance plant to attract butterflies to the garden.  This is the most popular variety and is very widely available.  Prune 'Black Knight' to about 18" in the early spring.  There are new varieties every year, but side by side most people choose this variety.
